November 2022 | Smart Giving: Why, When, and How This collaborative webinar was presented by Always United and the IU Indianapolis Senior Academy to discuss how to share your time and dollars with the causes and organizations that you are passionate about. The session addressed several ways to make dollar contributions that have tax benefits for the donor, as well as various ways of giving dollars or appreciated assets so that both the donor and the organization benefit. Featured speaker was Eugene Tempel, Professor of Philanthropic Studies; Founding Dean Emeritus, IU Indianapolis Lilly Family School of Philanthropy; and President Emeritus, Indiana University Foundation. He was assisted by Michael Caldwell, Manager of Estate Gift Planning of United Way of Central Indiana. |

October 2022 | IU Indianapolis Senior Academy Fall Social Senior Academy hosted their inaugural Fall Social at the Indianapolis Healthplex Sports Complex with a short formal program followed by a presentation by Chris Lanning, the clinical integration coordinator at the Healthplex. Chris specializes in developing customized and safe programs geared toward adults’ physical and mental wellness. The Social concluded with refreshments and a facility tour. |

Attendees took a walk in a meadow and on shaded, paved paths along the White River. The walk were in two parts: the StoryWalk was 1 mile; the second part on paved paths was 1.5 miles. |

March and April 2022 | The Mind's I Drawing Project and Exhibition The IU Indianapolis Senior Academy was a co-sponsor of The Mind’s I Drawing Project and Exhibition hosted by the Herron School of Art + Design with three events. The introductory lecture by Anne Harris took place on March 30, 2022. A workshop-like event of intensive work with 27 artists extends over three days was hosted March 29 through April 1, 2022. The drawings were exhibited at the Basile Gallery until April 26, 2022. A visit of the exhibition was a stop on the Senior Academy campus tour in the afternoon of April 5, 2022. |

January 2022 | Dealing with Market Volatility: What You Need to Know This webinar continues what has become somewhat of a tradition of presentations to the IU Indianapolis Senior Academy about the economy and the market by TIAA professionals and representatives of the local TIAA office. Although Indiana University is now working with Fidelity to administer its employees’ pension benefits, a significant number of IU Indianapolis retirees opted to continue to work with TIAA in managing their pension funds. On that basis of continued advice and services, Molly Phelps’s presentation addressed an important issue, helping to gain a better understanding of background against which investment decisions may be necessary, opportune, or desired. |

September 2021 | Renoir's Three Sisters and Nazi Art Theft The presentation is based on Helen Schwartz’s novel, Thieves of Paris, that grew out of her fascination with Nazi art theft and unfolding danger to Jews in the German-occupied City of Light. She was a professor of English at IU Indianapolis and then moved to Washington, D.C., a perfect place to consult the Paris phonebooks in the Library of Congress and search for documentation of Fieldmarshall Goering’s extortionate strategies at the National Archives. In Paris, she found city records and the many places still standing for use in her novel. As a member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, she has published short stories, available on her website. September 2021 | Updating the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis–Digitally in the 21st Century The print edition of the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis was published a quarter century ago. Much has happened since then in the circle city and also in publishing and communication. Designated a legacy project of the Indianapolis Bicentennial Commission, the digital Encyclopedia of Indianapolis is an online publication, a project of IU Indianapolis’s Polis Center. Beth Van Allen is the managing editor who plays a significant part in this project. Beth guides the editorial process and identifies and works with contributors. She is an experienced author, book editor, and journal editor who also has experience developing online history exhibitions. She wrote James Whitcomb Riley: A Life (Indiana University Press, 1999) and has worked on the history of philanthropy and medicine in Indianapolis. Beth presented about the work on the digital Encyclopedia. |

March 2021 | Digital Handmade: How Technology Is Impacting the Future of Art Shelley Spicuzza, coordinator of the Digital Fabrication/Imaging Lab at the Herron School of Art + Design, shared some of the exciting art being created at the intersection of art and technology. Shelley, an accomplished multi-media artist, directs the “Think-it, Make-it” lab at Herron, where students use computers and 3-D printers to create pieces of art. Two senior students, Katya Reinhard, specializing in ceramics, and Paul Williams, specializing in furniture design also displayed some of their work done in the lab.
