SENIOR ACADEMY FRESHMAN (IPS) SCHOLARSHIP

The Senior Academy at IU Indianapolis has established a scholarship program designed to partially support tuition and books for beginning freshmen who show the potential for academic excellence at IU Indianapolis. The scholarship will be awarded in the second semester of the awardee’s high-school senior-year for enrollment at IU Indianapolis in the following fall semester.

Amount: Up to $3,000 for the academic year

Deadline: February 15 (extended to April 15 for the AY 2021-2022 application)

Criteria and Selection

Applications are reviewed and the awardee selected by the Senior Academy Scholarship Committee.

Applicants must:

  1. Meet regular admission requirements to IU Indianapolis, 
  2. Have graduated from an Indianapolis Area Public School (Traditionally IPS or in the IPS district), and
  3. Have a high school grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

The applicant must also submit two letters of recommendation (must be from current or former high school teachers), and complete an essay on your academic objectives, community service, and career goals.

Applications without careful attention to the essay requirement will not rank highly. Work experience, including research if applicable and community service are carefully considered by the review committee as well.

2022 Scholarship Recipient

Samantha Vilchis

Beginning this fall, Samantha Vilchis is a rising freshman at IU Indianapolis with the goal of a bachelor's degree in nursing with a broader career objective of providing affordable health care to marginalized communities in the United States. Becoming an RN aligns with her long-time passion of assisting others and trying to improve their quality of life. In pursuit of that goal, she will learn about the community’s medical needs and how to help improve the conditions for providing it with quality health care. For that reason, she plans to attend medical school and to specialize in oncology in order to contribute to advances in the cancer research field.

She feels strongly about giving back to underserved populations in the U.S. who she knows struggle every day to sustain a family, and who do not have as much access to medical assistance as more privileged groups. She envisions creating a non-profit organization that will offer internships for medical school students throughout the nation and that also allows those interns to travel to isolated communities around the world to provide free medical services.
